In California’s Animal Friends of the Valleys Shelter, amidst wagging tails and hopeful eyes, there lived a sweet retriever mix named Oso. Oso was friendly, affectionate, and adorable — but he was so possessive over toys that two different owners had returned him to the shelter! The poor pupper’s mournful expression, drooping tail, and restless pacing showed that he had given up on ever finding a home. 

Fortunately, Furbo for Good and its newest partner, rescue pet advocate Rocky Kanaka, saw how special Oso was, and decided to write a wonderful new chapter for him. They arranged and funded intensive training and rehabilitation to clear up Oso’s behavioral issues. Plus, they built a shady oasis outside the shelter, so that Oso and his furry friends could comfortably enjoy the sunny California weather while they waited for their new families to find them.

Thanks to Furbo for Good and Rocky Kanaka, Oso was finally ready for the next step. One day, a wonderful family showed up at the shelter to meet him — with Scarlett, a playful Beauceron mix, in tow! Oso fell in love with his new pawrents and sister right away. Now, he’s happy, thriving, and successfully sharing his toys in his FURever home. With the Furbo 360° Dog Camera which we donated to ease his transition, we’ve even learned that Scarlett has introduced him to her favorite home-alone activity: watching TV!

Oso’s Journey: A Tale of Resilience and Love

Foster homes can make all the difference in the world for a homeless dog. Often they need a place to live if they are too young or too sick to be adopted, and temporary fostering can save these pups’ lives until they find their home. 

We were thrilled to meet Furbo Fam community member Shelly and her pup Watson! Shelly saved Watson from euthanasia, and gave him a beautiful doggy home. Shelter dogs like Watson often have special issues, which Furbo can help with - Watson’s Furbo has been essential in his transition, along with a lot of love.

In a South Carolina shelter last Christmas, a tiny, terrified beagle was just days away from being euthanized. The shelter had no beds or blankets, and the dogs had no outside access. His time was running out.

Thankfully, someone stepped in. The coworker of a very dedicated dog mom, Shelly, brought him home temporarily for some TLC. The family then reached out to Shelly with a simple description of the dog, wondering if she could take care of him, and something inside her said that she should help this pup out.

“I have been questioned on my passion to help animals in need. I have been told I don’t need more dogs. But why would I not want to help save the life of a perfectly good dog?” - Shelly 

Shelly brought the pup, whom she named Watson, to her home a few days later. He was scared of quick movements and noise, and had severe separation anxiety. He still doesn’t like being away from Shelly, so their Furbo helps to keep them connected even when Shelly is out of the house: she speaks to him through the camera to let him know she’s “there,” and sends him quick treats.

Watson has warmed up, and fell in love with Shelly’s other beagles, who soon became his friends. His tail began to wag. He began learning to play with toys, how to trust, how to love, and - according to Shelly - he is the king of cuddles. He also loves to chew on wood, something that Shelly is very thankful to catch on Furbo so she can stop him!

Best of all? Watson is a “foster failure,” meaning that Shelly adopted him for good. He loves wrestling with his sister Olive Oyl, doing zoomies in the yard, and teasing his four sisters with his toys. And, of course, he’s a real mama’s boy.

Foster “Failure”: From Kennel to Forever Home

At Furbo, we work to make dogs around the world happier and safer. It was a joy to work with foster-based rescues like Redemption Paws, who got Furbo cameras out to foster parents. Furbos can be an enormous help in a dog’s transition to foster care.

We were also honored to work with Live Like Roo, a unique charity that supports dogs with cancer diagnoses. Furbos improve quality of life for any dog, and we hoped to give special support to these dogs in the most difficult time.

Giving Tuesday: Giving Back to Dogs Around the World

For Giving Tuesday, Furbo partnered with charities to donated Furbos to dogs in need. We also donated two Furbos for every Furbo purchased that day.

2020 was an unprecedented year for all of us. In the US, our medical system was stretched to its limit during the raging pandemic. It was a year that tested courage, grit, and heart. Luckily for us, the fighters on the frontlines of the battle with COVID-19 had all three. Our medical workers worked around the clock to save lives.

Since our medical heroes were away from home so much, we decided to give out Furbo dog cameras to medical workers who felt the pain of being away from their pups. It turns out the pups were feeling it too: Ashley, a certified physician assistant, noticed her dog’s anxiety had heightened with her extended absence, resulting in some accidents. But after Furbo’s arrival, she said, “he has made a complete 180 and has no problems making it throughout the day.”

Other medical workers loved the emotional relief of being able to check on their dogs even during long, grueling nights. Jasmine (ICU nurse) was working night shifts, and the ability to check on her handsome pup at home gave her a bit of respite. “The nights can be long. But any time I have a chance, I check Furbo...I love being able to check in on Hudson, even if it’s only for a minute or two.”

We’re honored to have been a part of the lives of these heroes and their dogs. We are all connected in the ongoing battle against the pandemic, and we thank every medical worker for their contributions.

Battersea first opened its gates in 1860, and have since cared for over 3 million dogs and cats across three centres. The love and care staff at Battersea give to rescue animals fits perfectly with our goal of keeping dogs safe and happy. Dog behaviour specialists at Battersea use Furbos and Furbo Dog Nanny technology to support their work, preparing animals in their care for their loving new homes.

Furbo Training at Battersea with Dog Behavioural Experts 

Our community has told us that separation anxiety is one of their top three concerns, so Battersea shares some tips on how Furbo Dog Nanny can be used help with this. 

“Here at Battersea we recognise that, used in the right way, Furbo is a great tool to help with training your dog and also to overcome behavioural concerns like separation anxiety.

In the same way Furbo lets us see how dogs are doing in kennels at Battersea, it can give you peace of mind when you are out of the house. If something outside of your control has stressed your dog (for example a delivery) it can be a good idea to distract them with something positive. Using Furbo technology, you can speak to your dog to re-focus their attention and reward them once they engage with you. You could even ask them for a behaviour they know, such as going to their bed, and then reward them for this too. Just be careful you don’t start to dispense treats whenever they are barking as you might end up accidentally rewarding and encouraging that behaviour!

The Doggie Diary feature of Furbo Dog Nanny could also help you notice any patterns in your dog’s behaviour while you’re out of the house and might identify any triggers for restless behaviour, such as the post arriving through the door, or any loud noises from outside, which you can then work through with them.

If you see that your dog begins to get bored at certain times of the day this might be a good time to ask a dog walker to arrive, before they have the chance to start any behaviours you’re trying to move them past. It will mean they can get rid of any excess energy in a healthy way.

Furbo works as a training tool and to reward behaviours that you want to encourage by using a training technique called “shaping and capturing”

This means that you reward your dog for behaviours that are close enough to the final behaviour you want them to do, and that you “capture” and reward the behaviour if your dog naturally does it without being asked.

Battersea use these techniques because ultimately Furbo allows them to keep an eye on dogs and reward behaviours they want to encourage. This is a great way to help teach a dog to settle and remain calm and relaxed even when you are not around

Cat shelters worldwide need all the support they can get as they work tirelessly to grant rescue kitties a second chance. So when a new haven for these furbabies emerges, Furbo For Good is here to help!

Furbo For Good’s Commitment to Kitties Everywhere

In March 2024, Furbo For Good rallied in the first public-private partnership charity event of the year to celebrate the opening of Puzzle Cat’s new shelter in the Nangang district of Taipei, Taiwan. Volunteers worked for hours crafting handmade cat scratchers to welcome the new kitties to their temporary home.

But Furbo For Good has been hard at work to support cattos in need since 2022. In 2023, Furbo volunteers met in Houtong, Taiwan, to build shelters for the 200+ cats that inhabit the village. In addition to a cozy place to snooze, these shelters continue to provide safety from bad weather and a centralized location for medical professionals to treat these furry friends for unwanted pests and illnesses.

Furbo is dedicated to improving the well-being of rescue pets around the world. Their initiatives provide meals, shelter, training, and more to make a pawsitive difference!

You can also make these DIY cat scratchers for your local shelter (or your kitty at home)! All you’ll need is: 

Several old T-shirts (preferably in different colors)

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to start.

1. Working with one shirt at a time, lay the t-shirt flat on a table with the bottom of the shirt pointed toward you.

2. Starting at the bottom of the shirt and working up, cut each shirt into 1-2 inch wide strips. Try to keep the width consistent between strips!

3. Using strips from the same shirt, knot the ends together to make one long strip. The size of your cat scratcher will depend on the length of your connected strips. Longer strips = a wider cat scratcher. Repeat this process for each color until you’ve connected all small strips. 

4. Choose 3 strands and line them up so the top and the bottom of each are even. Using the needle and thread, stitch the strands together at the top.

5. Once secure, begin braiding the strands together.

🐱 Pro Tip: Place something heavy like a book at the top of the braid as you work your way down. This will keep your braid from loosening.

6. Fasten the end of the braid with a stitch similar to the top.

7. Measure and cut your rope to match the length of the braid. 

8. Line up the top of your braid with the top of the rope. Carefully glue the tops together with the hot glue gun.

8. Lay the now-connected rope and braid on the table. Grabbing the glued section near the top with your index finger and thumb, rotate the pieces in one direction. This will tighten the pieces as they spiral together. It’s important to keep it pressed onto the table so the shape stays even!

10. As you rotate, add small amounts of glue between the braid and the rope to help it stay together.

11. When you’ve reached your desired size (or the end of your fabric or rope), wrap one final layer of rope around the outside. If you’re feeling creative, a bit of extra rope can be used to add cat ears or whiskers!

Being in a shelter is a stressful experience for kitties waiting for their furever home. Having access to a cat scratcher lets them engage in their natural behaviors like stretching, sharpening their claws, and marking their territory. Any bit of comfort hoomans can provide these kitties-in-waiting makes life less scary.

As pawrents, there are few things we value above the love of our pups, and we want to give these amazing creatures the best lives we can.

And at Furbo, our mission is to keep all dogs worldwide safe and happy. So we’re very excited to partner with the Anti-Cruelty Society, an organization that works to provide vital help for pets, including rehoming. Every month, proceeds from subscriptions to our Furbo Dog Nanny service go toward giving shelter dogs room and board, vaccinations, vet visits, spay/neuter services & microchips.

Our goal is to re-home 1001 happy pups by the end of the year, and we’re making progress every month. We’re excited to introduce you to this month’s featured pup, Bryzzo!

Bryzzo is an energetic 2-year-old waiting for his forever family to find him. He is a BIG fan of squeaky toys! If there are more than one in the room, he runs back and forth to find his favorite. He’s a trainable pup, and is a rock star at sitting on command - he’s proud to demonstrate!

Bryzzo initially came to The Anti-Cruelty Society in May of this year, when he was surrendered due to his large size. He was formerly adopted, then relinquished again when his owner found him to be too active. This sweet boy is looking for his true home for the third time around.

Because of Bryzzo’s active nature, he needs a family that lives a very active lifestyle and will take many walks (and jogs!) with him. A big yard for him to run around and stretch his legs would be ideal for this handsome boy! He's super friendly with all ages, but he would do best in a home without any young children or other animals.

I Built a Tiny House for a Homeless Dog *Budget Challenge*

These are no simple doghouses! Rocky’s built real tiny houses with sitting areas, furniture, and everything that a dog would have in his forever home. This helps the dogs get used to a home environment, and keeps them comfy in the meantime. 

And of course, the Furbo inside the house lets Rocky keep an eye on the dogs when he isn’t around - and lets him give the pups yummy treats for reassurance. 

We’re collaborating with Rocky and other organizations to help rehome 1,001 dogs by the end of 2020.

Ever Seen a Tiny House for a Dog? Check This Out!

Houtong is a small village nestled in the mountainous regions of northeast Taiwan. Cats have called this place home for a long time. With only around 100 local human residents, the village is now home to more than 200 cats, earning it a spot as one of the "5 places where cat outshine tourist attactions," according to CNN. 

However, despite its picturesque charm, the cat village faces challenges such as disease outbreaks, shortage of volunteers, and the occasional incidents of animal cruelty.

In 2022, Furbo set out to make a difference with our “Furbo For Good” initative. We pledge that for every Furbo Pet Camera sold, a portion of Furbo’s profit is contributed to the Furbo For Good fund to help stray animals worldwide. 

This summer, Furbo rallied hundreds of volunteers from our global offices to put our words into action and help improve the conditions of Houtong Cat Village. 

Building Cat Shelters:
To ensure that cats can find refuge and safety during heavy rain and harsh winter months, we handcrafted sturdy and warm cat shelters and placed them all over the valley of Houtong. These handcrafted shelters not only serve as a home for the cats, but also as a reminder to all visitors of Houtong to treat stray animals with greater kindness.



Environmental Clean-up and Pest Control:
The high cat occupancy of the area makes pest infestations rare but an unavoidable problem. We assisted in cleaning up the areas where the cats frequent and donated pest control medicine to ensure the continual health of these local furry residents.

Adding charm to the space:   
Over time, the Houtong Train Station has weathered sun and rain. Not only did the Furbo team went above and beyond cleaning, but also took it upon ourselves to make the area vibrant and inviting. Allowing vistors to be visually engaged upon their arrival of Houtong Train Station and encourage them to linger a little longer to learn about the wonders of this place.

While the influence of a single individual may be limited, the collective strength of many can be formidable. Furbo For Good will continue to aid stray animals, with the hope that every stray animal finds a home and receives gentle care.

Did you know? The average lifespan of domestic cats is over a decade, while stray cats typically only live 2-3 years. Stray cats face uncertainty from birth, dealing with homelessness, diseases, accidents, and threat of abuse. Over here at Furbo, we took the team to Taiwan's Houtong Cat Village to try and help improve the lives of local cats, while promoting a harmonious coexistence between local residents and their furry friends.

We here at Furbo love to celebrate pups from all walks of life. There’s nothing better than a tail-wagging pup and a happy human by their side. Today we highlight an adoption story from Tess and her new furbaby Zayn.

Zayn comes from the shelter Wags & Walks. Wags & Walks have shelters in both Los Angeles and Nashville. Their mission is to focus on rescuing dogs that are at risk for overcrowding at other shelters and finding them love and happiness.

Zayn was a pup from the ‘One Direction’ litter with his other siblings! He is a beautiful mixed breed who is playful, loving, and energetic.

When asked about why she wanted to adopt, Tess said: “I grew up with dogs and always knew I wanted one of my own.” She attended Wags and Walks for an event but decided to fill out an application. She ended up fostering Zayn and then eventually adopting him!

“[Zayn] has transitioned seamlessly into our lives, He is almost full house broken and we can trust him outside of his crate and alone for 3 hours at a time!” Any new family member can present challenges, but Zayn has brought so much joy into Tess’ home. 

Zayn is a five-month-old healthy dog. His favorite activities include playing tug of war, chasing a frisbee, and eating peanut butter. Zayn also loves to cuddle and snooze between his mom and dad.

Furbo can be a great tool for new paw-rents, especially with rescue dogs. It can be hard to always keep an eye on your pup at all times. With Furbo you can watch them, toss treats, and even talk to them when you’re not home. Tess says it’s been helpful when acclimating her new family member. 

“Furbo has been great with training but mostly calms my anxiety when he is home alone. I love being able to talk to him and rewarding him with a treat even when I'm not home.”

When Sally was calm and quiet, Battersea would toss her a treat through Furbo teaching her to associate alone time with something positive.

Greyhounds are often misunderstood, which can lead to them being overlooked. Because of this, the lovely Sally spent quite some time at Battersea waiting for a new home. Although Sally did find a home, she was brought back due to her separation anxiety.

As well as using the Furbo to dispense a treat after leaving her kennel, they also used it to keep an eye on her when in one of their “home rooms” (decked out to simulate a home environment). When Sally was calm and quiet, Battersea would toss her a treat through Furbo teaching her to associate alone time with something positive.

As a result of the training and support, Sally grew more and more relaxed and happy, and soon found a new home. The Battersea team transferred all their knowledge and training to her new pawrent, helping ensure she would settle well into her new home.

Keep your dog safe and happy even when you're not home

National Craft for your Local Shelters Day, on July 21st, is a holiday to recognize that we can donate to our local shelters with acts of love and kindness. This includes making beds, toys, vests and bandanas that say "adopt me," leashes, and more! Using fabric or even old clothing that you have around your house, you can make a difference for furbabies in need.

Before you begin, be sure to contact the shelter you’re considering donating to and confirm that they will receive your donation! Some shelters may have a surplus of supplies, or may appreciate different crafts more than others.

Here are 5 fun crafts you can make to donate and help your local animal shelter:

1. No-Sew Bandana Bandanas are one of the easiest crafts you can make for shelter furbabies, to help get them noticed by potential adopters. Using felt and fabric glue you can also attach the words “Adopt Me” for furbabies to wear while out in public, on a walk, or in foster care.

A high-demand pet supply at rescue shelters is pet beds. Using felt or reused fabric from clothing and blankets, along with pillows for stuffing, you can easily make a comfy bed for furbabies. 

Fun toys are in high demand at animal shelters, to help keep doggos happy and entertained throughout their residence. Using materials you already have around the house, including t-shirts and towels, you can braid together fabric to make a durable tug toy.

Dogs and cats of all sizes appreciate a good blanket to keep them company at night in the shelter. For dogs that are more playful and high risk of tearing through a stuffed bed, a no-stuffing blanket can be a great solution.

For all of the feline furbabies, you can recycle cardboard boxes to make a cat scratching pad! This fun toy will enrich the lives of shelter cats while giving new life to your leftover packaging. Cats have a natural desire to scratch and it helps them remove the dead outer layer of their claws.

National Craft for your Local Shelters Day, on July 21st, is a holiday to recognize that we can donate to our local shelters with acts of love and kindness. This includes making beds, toys, vests, and bandanas that say "adopt me," leashes, and more! Using fabric or even old clothing that you have around your house, you can make a difference for furbabies in need.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - to adopt! There are so many wonderful dogs in shelters just waiting for a second chance. While you’re home this holiday season, give some thought to adopting a pup. It will change their lives forever for the better, and yours as well.

If you’re considering adoption, have a look at these sweet pups at the Humane Society of Charlotte. We’re collaborating with HSC (along with other organizations) to help rehome 1,001 dogs by the end of the year!

I arrived at HSC in April of 2020 with 7 nursing puppies who were just a few days old.  I was malnourished.  You could see my spine and hip bones with ease.  I had an infection in both ears with patches of dry skin and hair loss.  I also tested a high positive for heartworm.  Despite my condition, I allowed the medical staff at HSC to handle all of my puppies during their health examinations. 

 After only two weeks in foster, my milk production decreased and my health began to decline.  I was brought in for an emergency Veterinary visit and it was determined that my heartworm condition was causing heart failure.  I could no longer care for my puppies, so they were sent to foster families to be bottle fed and raised. 

Fast forward to now, I have successfully undergone heartworm treatment and am no longer in heart failure!  My treatment was made possible through the Have A Heart medical fund.  My heartworm condition was advanced and without the generous donations of the Charlotte community, I would not have survived.  To learn more about the Have A Heart medical fund, check out this link!  https://humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/give/

 While undergoing heartworm treatment, I was placed in a foster home to recover.  In foster, I am reported to be snuggly and sweet with my foster parents.  I would be nervous when new friends came over to visit, but with a proper introduction to your friends, I will be just as sweet on them too! 

I’ve had an opportunity to meet other dogs during my stay at HSC but I prefer the company of the staff and volunteers.  Because of this, I will be most successful in a home without other dogs. 

My adoption fee is waived in lieu of a donation made to the shelter!

At HSC, one of my favorite activities are the canine playgroups!  During playgroup staff and volunteers say I’m a lot of fun.  I romp, wrestle, chase, and interact with the other dogs waiting to be adopted.  I’d do well in your home with just you or with you and your resident canine companion.  

Did you know?!  I am a ‘Have a Heart’ fund recipient.  I have heartworms that will need to be treated in the home, but through this fund, the Humane Society of Charlotte has a voucher to assist with fees for the treatment. The treatment at their partnering vet clinics is done at a reduced rate for our adopters.  Our partner clinics will provide me with top notch care and support during the treatment.  I am in need of an adopter that will maintain a great relationship with my vet to help get me heartworm free!

The Best Present: Adopt a Dog This Season

Staff at California’s Animal Friends of the Valleys Shelter found an unexpected guest awaiting them one morning: a young Dogo Argentino mix, anxiously trembling in the shelter’s night drop. They took the abandoned pup in and decided to call him Casper — a name befitting his beautiful white coat. For the next three hours, Casper stood paralyzed with fear, gazing longingly at each passing stranger as if hoping that his family would come back for him. Not long afterwards, the shelter uncovered the shocking truth: the sweet pup’s owner, who had adopted him exactly one year prior, wanted nothing more to do with him! 

With Furbo For Good’s support, pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka arrived to offer a lifeline to a brighter future as Casper’s world grew dim. It took Rocky hours to connect with the terrified dog, but his patience and perseverance paid off. Slowly, Casper let his guard down. He stopped being frozen in place and transformed into an adorable lovebug, melting into Rocky’s lap and showering him with kisses.

Thanks to Rocky and the shelter’s intervention, Casper found his furever home just in time for the New Year! To ease his transition, Furbo sent him home with a Furbo 360° Dog Camera, so that his new pawrents could make sure he was safe and happy anytime, anywhere.
