Staff at California’s Animal Friends of the Valleys Shelter found an unexpected guest awaiting them one morning: a young Dogo Argentino mix, anxiously trembling in the shelter’s night drop. They took the abandoned pup in and decided to call him Casper — a name befitting his beautiful white coat. For the next three hours, Casper stood paralyzed with fear, gazing longingly at each passing stranger as if hoping that his family would come back for him. Age: 6 yearsSex: FemaleBreed: American Pit BullI arrived at HSC in April of 2020 with 7 nursing puppies who were just a few days old.  I was malnourished.  You could see my spine and hip bones with ease.  I had an infection in both ears with patches of dry skin and hair loss.  I also tested a high positive for heartworm.  Despite my condition, I allowed the medical staff at HSC to handle all of my puppies during their health examinations.  After only two weeks in foster, my milk production decreased and my health began to decline.  I was brought in for an emergency Veterinary visit and it was determined that my heartworm condition was causing heart failure.  I could no longer care for my puppies, so they were sent to foster families to be bottle fed and raised. Fast forward to now, I have successfully undergone heartworm treatment and am no longer in heart failure!  My treatment was made possible through the Have A Heart medical fund.  My heartworm condition was advanced and without the generous donations of the Charlotte community, I would not have survived.  To learn more about the Have A Heart medical fund, check out this link!  <a href="https://humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/give/" target="_self">https://humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/give/</a> While undergoing heartworm treatment, I was placed in a foster home to recover.  In foster, I am reported to be snuggly and sweet with my foster parents.  I would be nervous when new friends came over to visit, but with a proper introduction to your friends, I will be just as sweet on them too! I’ve had an opportunity to meet other dogs during my stay at HSC but I prefer the company of the staff and volunteers.  Because of this, I will be most successful in a home without other dogs. My adoption fee is waived in lieu of a donation made to the shelter!If you are interested in adopting me, find my profile at <a href="http://www.petango.com/HSC" target="_self">www.petango.com/HSC</a> and fill out the adoption questionnaire to get started! Greyhounds are often misunderstood, which can lead to them being overlooked. Because of this, the lovely Sally spent quite some time at Battersea waiting for a new home. Although Sally did find a home, she was brought back due to her separation anxiety.As well as using the Furbo to dispense a treat after leaving her kennel, they also used it to keep an eye on her when in one of their “home rooms” (decked out to simulate a home environment). When Sally was calm and quiet, Battersea would toss her a treat through Furbo teaching her to associate alone time with something positive.

As a result of the training and support, Sally grew more and more relaxed and happy, and soon found a new home. The Battersea team transferred all their knowledge and training to her new pawrent, helping ensure she would settle well into her new home.

Today we highlight an adoption story from Tess and her new furbaby Zayn.Zayn comes from the shelter Wags & Walks. Wags & Walks have shelters in both Los Angeles and Nashville. Their mission is to focus on rescuing dogs that are at risk for overcrowding at other shelters and finding them love and happiness.Zayn was a pup from the ‘One Direction’ litter with his other siblings! He is a beautiful mixed breed who is playful, loving, and energetic.When asked about why she wanted to adopt, Tess said: “I grew up with dogs and always knew I wanted one of my own.” She attended Wags and Walks for an event but decided to fill out an application. She ended up fostering Zayn and then eventually adopting him!

“[Zayn] has transitioned seamlessly into our lives, He is almost full house broken and we can trust him outside of his crate and alone for 3 hours at a time!” Any new family member can present challenges, but Zayn has brought so much joy into Tess’ home. Zayn is a five-month-old healthy dog. His favorite activities include playing tug of war, chasing a frisbee, and eating peanut butter. Zayn also loves to cuddle and snooze between his mom and dad.

Houtong Cat Village: Beauty and SadnessHoutong is a small village nestled in the mountainous regions of northeast Taiwan. Cats have called this place home for a long time. With only around 100 local human residents, the village is now home to more than 200 cats, earning it a spot as one of the "5 places where cat outshine tourist attactions," according to CNN. However, despite its picturesque charm, the cat village faces challenges such as disease outbreaks, shortage of volunteers, and the occasional incidents of animal cruelty.

The Mission of the Furbo For GoodIn 2022, Furbo set out to make a difference with our “Furbo For Good” initative. We pledge that for every Furbo Pet Camera sold, a portion of Furbo’s profit is contributed to the Furbo For Good fund to help stray animals worldwide. This summer, Furbo rallied hundreds of volunteers from our global offices to put our words into action and help improve the conditions of Houtong Cat Village. <ul><li>Building Cat Shelters:
To ensure that cats can find refuge and safety during heavy rain and harsh winter months, we handcrafted sturdy and warm cat shelters and placed them all over the valley of Houtong. These handcrafted shelters not only serve as a home for the cats, but also as a reminder to all visitors of Houtong to treat stray animals with greater kindness.

</li></ul><ul><li>Environmental Clean-up and Pest Control:
The high cat occupancy of the area makes pest infestations rare but an unavoidable problem. We assisted in cleaning up the areas where the cats frequent and donated pest control medicine to ensure the continual health of these local furry residents.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Adding charm to the space:   
Over time, the Houtong Train Station has weathered sun and rain. Not only did the Furbo team went above and beyond cleaning, but also took it upon ourselves to make the area vibrant and inviting. Allowing vistors to be visually engaged upon their arrival of Houtong Train Station and encourage them to linger a little longer to learn about the wonders of this place.</li></ul>

While the influence of a single individual may be limited, the collective strength of many can be formidable. Furbo For Good will continue to aid stray animals, with the hope that every stray animal finds a home and receives gentle care.

These are no simple doghouses! Rocky’s built real tiny houses with sitting areas, furniture, and everything that a dog would have in his forever home. Because of Bryzzo’s active nature, he needs a family that lives a very active lifestyle and will take many walks (and jogs!) with him. A big yard for him to run around and stretch his legs would be ideal for this handsome boy! In 2023, Furbo volunteers met in Houtong, Taiwan, to <a href="https://furbo.com/blog/en/article/furbo-for-good-built-cat-houses-to-protect-cats" target="_self">build shelters for the 200+ cats</a> that inhabit the village. In addition to a cozy place to snooze, these shelters continue to provide safety from bad weather and a centralized location for medical professionals to treat these furry friends for unwanted pests and illnesses.

Their initiatives provide meals, shelter, training, and more to make a pawsitive difference!<h2>How to Make a Handmade Cat Scratcher</h2>You can also make these DIY cat scratchers for your local shelter (or your kitty at home)! All you’ll need is: <ul><li>Several old T-shirts (preferably in different colors)</li></ul><ul><li>Scissors</li></ul><ul><li>Thread and needle</li></ul><ul><li>Rope</li></ul><ul><li>Hot glue gun</li></ul>Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to start.1. Working with one shirt at a time, lay the t-shirt flat on a table with the bottom of the shirt pointed toward you.2. Starting at the bottom of the shirt and working up, cut each shirt into 1-2 inch wide strips. Try to keep the width consistent between strips!3. Using strips from the same shirt, knot the ends together to make one long strip. The size of your cat scratcher will depend on the length of your connected strips. Longer strips = a wider cat scratcher. Repeat this process for each color until you’ve connected all small strips. 4. Choose 3 strands and line them up so the top and the bottom of each are even. Using the needle and thread, stitch the strands together at the top.5. Once secure, begin braiding the strands together.🐱 Pro Tip: Place something heavy like a book at the top of the braid as you work your way down. This will keep your braid from loosening.

6. Fasten the end of the braid with a stitch similar to the top.7. Measure and cut your rope to match the length of the braid. 8. Line up the top of your braid with the top of the rope. Carefully glue the tops together with the hot glue gun.8. Lay the now-connected rope and braid on the table. Grabbing the glued section near the top with your index finger and thumb, rotate the pieces in one direction. This will tighten the pieces as they spiral together. It’s important to keep it pressed onto the table so the shape stays even!10. As you rotate, add small amounts of glue between the braid and the rope to help it stay together.11. When you’ve reached your desired size (or the end of your fabric or rope), wrap one final layer of rope around the outside. If you’re feeling creative, a bit of extra rope can be used to add cat ears or whiskers!

2020 was an unprecedented year for all of us. In the US, our medical system was stretched to its limit during the raging pandemic. It was a year that tested courage, grit, and heart. Luckily for us, the fighters on the frontlines of the battle with COVID-19 had all three. Our medical workers worked around the clock to save lives.

Ashley and her dog, HallieSince our medical heroes were away from home so much, we decided to give out <a href="https://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo dog cameras</a> to medical workers who felt the pain of being away from their pups. It turns out the pups were feeling it too: Ashley, a certified physician assistant, noticed her dog’s anxiety had heightened with her extended absence, resulting in some accidents. But after Furbo’s arrival, she said, “he has made a complete 180 and has no problems making it throughout the day.”

Ashley and her dog, DocOther medical workers loved the emotional relief of being able to check on their dogs even during long, grueling nights. Jasmine (ICU nurse) was working night shifts, and the ability to check on her handsome pup at home gave her a bit of respite. “The nights can be long. But any time I have a chance, I check <a href="https://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a>...I love being able to check in on Hudson, even if it’s only for a minute or two.”

So for Giving Tuesday, we worked to broaden our mission and help the dogs who need a little extra love, including dogs in shelters and dogs in foster homes. In 2022, we partnered with shelters and charities to give free Furbos to the pups who need the most care!

And for each Furbo bought on Giving Tuesday, we also matched that purchase and donated two Furbos to charities. This meant that not only did our customers get to treat their own pups to the best in smart pet cameras, but they also contributed to the cause of helping dogs in need.It was a joy to work with foster-based rescues like <a href="https://redemptionpaws.org/" target="_self">Redemption Paws</a>, who got Furbo cameras out to foster parents. Furbos can be an enormous help in a dog’s transition to foster care.

We were also honored to work with <a href="https://www.livelikeroo.org/" target="_self">Live Like Roo</a>, a unique charity that supports dogs with cancer diagnoses. Furbos improve quality of life for any dog, and we hoped to give special support to these dogs in the most difficult time.

Often they need a place to live if they are too young or too sick to be adopted, and temporary fostering can save these pups’ lives until they find their home. We were thrilled to meet <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/FurboVIP" target="_blank">Furbo Fam</a> community member Shelly and her pup Watson! Shelly saved Watson from euthanasia, and gave him a beautiful doggy home. Shelter dogs like Watson often have special issues, which <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> can help with - Watson’s Furbo has been essential in his transition, along with a lot of love.Read more about this foster journey!

In a South Carolina shelter last Christmas, a tiny, terrified beagle was just days away from being euthanized. The shelter had no beds or blankets, and the dogs had no outside access. His time was running out.

Thankfully, someone stepped in. The coworker of a very dedicated dog mom, Shelly, brought him home temporarily for some TLC. The family then reached out to Shelly with a simple description of the dog, wondering if she could take care of him, and something inside her said that she should help this pup out.“I have been questioned on my passion to help animals in need. I have been told I don’t need more dogs. But why would I not want to help save the life of a perfectly good dog?” - Shelly Shelly brought the pup, whom she named Watson, to her home a few days later. He was scared of quick movements and noise, and had severe separation anxiety. He still doesn’t like being away from Shelly, so their <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> helps to keep them connected even when Shelly is out of the house: she speaks to him through the camera to let him know she’s “there,” and sends him quick treats.

Watson has warmed up, and fell in love with Shelly’s other beagles, who soon became his friends. His tail began to wag. He began learning to play with toys, how to trust, how to love, and - according to Shelly - he is the king of cuddles. He also loves to chew on wood, something that Shelly is very thankful to catch on Furbo so she can stop him!Best of all? Watson is a “foster failure,” meaning that Shelly adopted him for good. He loves wrestling with his sister Olive Oyl, doing zoomies in the yard, and teasing his four sisters with his toys. And, of course, he’s a real mama’s boy.

In California’s Animal Friends of the Valleys Shelter, amidst wagging tails and hopeful eyes, there lived a sweet retriever mix named Oso. Oso was friendly, affectionate, and adorable — but he was so possessive over toys that two different owners had returned him to the shelter! The poor pupper’s mournful expression, drooping tail, and restless pacing showed that he had given up on ever finding a home. Fortunately, <a href="https://furbo.com/us/pages/furbo-for-good" target="_self">Furbo for Good</a> and its newest partner, rescue pet advocate <a href="https://rockykanaka.com" target="_self">Rocky Kanaka</a>, saw how special Oso was, and decided to write a wonderful new chapter for him. They arranged and funded intensive training and rehabilitation to clear up Oso’s behavioral issues. Plus, they built a shady oasis outside the shelter, so that Oso and his furry friends could comfortably enjoy the sunny California weather while they waited for their new families to find them.

Thanks to Furbo for Good and Rocky Kanaka, Oso was finally ready for the next step. One day, a wonderful family showed up at the shelter to meet him — with Scarlett, a playful Beauceron mix, in tow! Oso fell in love with his new pawrents and sister right away. Now, he’s happy, thriving, and successfully sharing his toys in his FURever home.
