It’s almost 2023! The year has flown by, with another 365 days spent with lots of walks, fetch, and treat tossing. The end of the year can be a beautiful and nostalgic time, with so much to celebrate. One tradition of New Year’s Eve celebrations is the bright (and loud) fireworks. While an amazing display in the sky, it can cause stress or fear in dogs. Read on to find out why some dogs are afraid of fireworks, what happens when they are scared, and how to help them soothe during New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Why are dogs scared of fireworks?

Although not all dogs are afraid of fireworks, it is very common among many dog breeds. Dogs tend to be more sensitive to noise than humans, because they can hear twice as many frequencies as humans. Additionally, their survival instincts can kick in when an unexpected noise occurs.

Dogs can develop after experiencing new stimuli that frightens them. This usually occurs at a puppy age, but can also happen later in life. It is possible to desensitize your dog to fireworks by playing fireworks sounds at a progressive volume and rewarding calm behavior. You can start with a lower volume and increase if your dog does not become fearful. However, desensitization is not always the best option, so read on for techniques on how your pup can handle fear!

Common anxiety symptoms include: panting, shaking, and whining. Additionally, if your dog is scared, they can try to hide in an enclosed area, like under the bed, in a closet, or in the bathroom.
