So Tomofun, a Seattle-based company, is launching the <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a>, an interactive camera, that lets owners watch their dogs doing their dog thing throughout the day. (Yes, it has night vision, too.) The accompanying iOS and Android app send owners push notifications when their dog starts barking, so they can try to soothe their pup through <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo's</a> two-way audio. The best feature, though, is Furbo's "treat popping system," which lets owners toss their dog treats throughout the day. Here's the treat machine in action:

The most popular pet is the dog—there’s one in 52 million homes. Those homes will spend an average $1,641 per year on one dog. And big companies like Mars Inc., the private candy giant that does $33 billion in annual revenue, are taking note.In April, through its petcare division, Mars spent $117 million to acquire Whistle, which makes a Fitbit-like fitness tracker that slips onto a dog collar. It was a smart buy: Grand View Research expects the pet wearables market to reach $2.36 billion by 2022. Why? “Increasing awareness towards pet health & fitness,” the firm says. Whistle tracks your dog’s physical activity, graphs it on an app, and notifies you each day of whether your dog hit their daily goal. It’s also a sly way to test your dog-walker, since you can see how long each walk really lasted.The inspiration for Whistle was founder and CEO Ben Jacobs’s childhood dog, a German Shepherd name Bear. He was uninsured—less than 3% of US dog owners buy health insurance for their dogs—and at age 5, suddenly got sick. The veterinary bill, sans insurance, would have been in the five figures. The family had to put Bear down.Whistle’s goal, Jacobs says, was, to encourage owners, “Let’s bring our dog to the veterinarian a little bit earlier, and once we’re there, have some better information to help you take care of them.” That information includes how many hours of the day your dog walked, ran, played, and rested. And Whistle has partnered with veterinary researchers to work on adding a function that would warn you when your dog shows signs of epilepsy.

Joining Mars Petcare, which owns food brands Iams and Eukanuba as well as more veterinary clinics than any other company in the country, forged Whistle a variety of new connections in the pet care world. It launched a Whistle Shelter Love program, through which it promotes animal shelters like Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. (The dog who cameos in the above Yahoo Finance video, Dale Earnhardt Jr., is adoptable through Badass Brooklyn.) While Whistle started as a simple activity monitor, it eventually added GPS, and has ambitions to eventually track nearly everything that yields data.“When you think about the next five years, I think there really should be a single view of your pet,” Jacobs says. “Right now it’s a very manual process: If you move to a new city, or you go to a new vet, or if you get a new dog walker, you’re building up that level of trust and frankly, giving your child away to this other caretaker. We think a company like Whistle can bring all these disparate parts of the industry together… There will be one platform to power them all.”Whistle isn’t the only tech startup taking advantage of the pet tech trend, and it isn’t only happening in hardware. Mobile apps like DogVacay and Rover help you find a place to board your dog when you’re away (think of them as Airbnb for dogs), and have gotten hot very quickly. BarkBox is a subscription service that sends you a surprise package of dog goodies. In the fitness-tracking space, there are competitors like Nuzzle, and in GPS monitoring (a functionality Whistle added to its device when it acquired Tagg last year) are Gibi, PetPace, Pod, Tractive, Voyce, Wüf, and others. To name yet another example, outdoor stores like REI now sell GoPro camera harnesses for dogs.While Whistle has emerged quickly as a household name in the hardware sector, Jacobs cautions, “It’s not really creating the trend, I think it’s part of it.”Another part of it is a product like Furbo, from the Seattle-based company Tomofun. <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a>, which resembles an Amazon Echo in shape and size, is a combination camera and treat dispenser, allowing you to watch your dog from work and also throw him a treat. It has two-way audio, a 720p HD camera, and a night-vision setting. It is a clever device. The company calls <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> an “all-in-one dog sitter.”The product launched on Indiegogo, where it raised $481,250 and sold 118 units, at $139 apiece, which it will ship out this month. Eventually, it will also sell on Amazon and on its own website.

Much like Jacobs and Whistle, <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> has a personal origin story. Tomofun CEO Victor Chang says, “My wife and I left our dog at home every day, and we always felt so bad. This way, the camera lets you see them and toss out a treat.” It also lets you talk to them from your phone, though in tests it was doubtful that the dog recognizes the tinny, somewhat distorted voice. Chang responds, “They might know it’s you talking, they just don’t care. But if you throw out a treat after talking, they make a positive association.” <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> will also send you a push notification to let you know if your dog is barking.In a way, all the pet-tech companies echo trends in human tech. Chang compares Furbo to Nest (which sold to Apple) and Canary, popular household monitoring devices. Jacobs says Whistle came along just before the explosion in human fitness wearables like Fitbit and Jawbone, but they all share much in common.In other words, humans aren’t so different from their dogs—both are eager to count their steps and prove their healthfulness. The dog then gets kisses as mom says ‘Be a good boy! Bye!’ By the time the door closes, the pet’s anxiety is through the roof. They race around the house trying to see you out the window and it's difficult to calm back down.”

Incorporate Furbo in your morning routines Dr. Medders recommends making the exits as low-key as possible. For example, put your shoes on in your room, don't let your keys jingle and don't tell your pet over and over you're leaving. “This is where my Furbo comes in. He pants, starts drooling everywhere and continues to run from door to window just in case he can see me. He's a corgi golden retriever mix and the goofiest kiddo ever.”When Eugene gets stressed out, Milo reflects it and will howl with him... so then I'm stuck with two stressed out pups. For the most part, the camera feedback is clear, but it does have a 2- to 3-second delay. Timing is everything in dog training, so dispensing a treat for a “sit,” “down” or no barking may cause issues due to the delay.The microphone feature was a bit tiny sounding, but worked quickly. It does have a slight delay as well though. Once the camera and microphone were set up, it only took 1-2 seconds to open the Furbo app and see a clear view of the room.Tips for Using FurboFrom a dog trainer’s perspective, the <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo dog camera</a> offers useful options to check in and reward your dog for good behavior throughout the day or evening. To keep your Furbo safe from dog teeth, place the device on a countertop, table, or shelf with the popper facing toward a large open area. It’s best to place the device on a high surface 2 inches from the edge because the popper is where treats are dispensed. You also want to make sure the popper faces toward an open area to prevent treats from getting lost behind furniture or appliances.  Positively Introduce FurboBefore leaving the Furbo with your dogs, take a day or two to positively introduce Furbo’s sounds. Grab a handful of yummy treats, and sit next to the Furbo device. Open the app, turn down the microphone sound and play with all the features except the treat dispensing option for now.Reward your dog every time the device chirps, bings and your voice is heard through the microphone. Pairing good things with strange sounds lets your dog know these sounds are a good thing and make treats appear.Use Hard TreatsNow, it’s time to play with the treat dispensing option! Fill the treat canister with hard treats. I used Fruitable treats. While it’s tempting to use soft treats, such as string cheese or hot dogs, these dog-training treats will probably cause the dispenser to jam.Bring one dog into the living room with the <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> and slide the treat dispensing icon on the app screen. Your dog will hear a binging sound and a treat will shoot out. Soon, your dog will learn that the Furbo binging sound means treats are coming, and he’ll run toward the device. After 5-6 dispensed treats, it’s time to practice with your other dog.If your dogs argue over treats, it’s best not to use the treat dispensing option when they’re together.Lower the VolumeDogs have incredible hearing abilities, so loud screeching noises can be painful. Turn down the microphone volume or, better yet, skip this option altogether. This feature was likely added because people enjoy talking to their darling dogs. While chatting is normal human behavior, it can be distracting and scary to dogs over a microphone.Instead of calling your dog over to the camera using the microphone, dispense a treat instead. When treats are dispensed, the <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo device</a> makes a binging sound that will alert your dog that treats are coming. If this happens to you, give the camera a moment to catch up before dispensing a treat. It’s essentially a window into the user’s home or apartment that costs considerably less than signing a dog up for daycare each day, even if it may make users look a tad silly as they talk sweet nothings to their canine best friend through a smartphone.Though not the first treat dispenser to hit the market, <a href="http://furbo.com/furbodogcamera" target="_self">Furbo</a> is packed to the gills with innovative features that could put it ahead of its competition — assuming the device is as reliable as the Indiegogo page lets on. For starters, Furbo packs a high-quality camera which gives users the ability to tune into a live HD feed of what’s going on at home and record any of the videos they are watching.Additionally, Furbo boasts a two-way speaker, meaning not only do owners have the option of listening in on their pup but they get to communicate directly to Rex or Fido as well. Concerning its pop-ability, Furbo doesn’t mess around; the device absolutely launches the treat at the dog, turning the awarding of a simple treat into a full-out game.Contrary to Furbo’s Indiegogo campaign page which calls it the “world’s first treat-dispensing dog camera,” other such products do exist. Take the Petzi Treat Cam, for instance. Launched last year to middling reviews, Petzi boasts many of the features Furbo advertises but misses out on a few crucial traits: live video feeds and the ability to directly communicate with your pet. Petzi does take photos and allows for the distribution of treats but Furbo’s ability to give owners a live look into what their dog is doing, as well as its ability to pipe real-time audio to their pet, gives it a bit more allure than the competition. The view angle is on par with the industry standard at 120 degrees. As with all pet cameras, placement determines your field of view. It takes a little time to find the best place, for your home and your dog.SetupThe Furbo and the corresponding phone app is very easy to use. Setting up the device took only 20 minutes and was clearly explained in the quick start guide. One thing that could have been more clear in the Quick Start Guide would be how to load the treats. But that is so easy after the first time that it’s never an issue anymore. There is a training video included with the app. This video helps to get your dog acquainted with Furbo.Features: video qualityFurbo uses a 720P camera with night vision. The image through the app is clear and smooth. In low light conditions, the image stayed bright enough to see what’s going on. The picture quality is not as high as with some 1080P cameras, but it also doesn’t use as much bandwidth. Both in night vision mode and normal mode, the video is very sharp and gives a good view of the room. The room, we tested it in, is a bit crowded so we didn’t have as big a view as we wanted. But even against the light coming from the window, you can see almost everything, which shows the performance of the camera.In pitch black, the night vision of Furbo makes it possible to see exactly what is going on. This can be really useful for dogs that get upset during night time, or to increase the security of your home.Features: Sound qualityThe microphone records close to every sound in the house. It can be difficult to hear it when you are in a noisy place, but with headphones, you hear almost everything. The speaker works well, but we didn’t test it specifically for sound quality. Dogs hear it well enough to respond to it.Features: Web Interface and Smartphone AppThe Furbo currently only works with a smartphone app. This is available for iPhone and Android through the respective app stores. We used the iPhone version, and it worked without any problems. The interface is simple and clear, and the few settings are easy to access. The app didn’t use a lot of power or bandwidth during standby. When we were watching the live stream for 10 minutes, it would use about 65 MB of data.The app has a barking alarm. That means that you get an alert on your smartphone if your dog is barking. Then you can check on the camera, talk and dispense treats at the time when the dog most needs it. The alarm worked well during our test. It always sent an alert when the dog was barking.Features: Treat dispenserFurbo has a treat dispenser that you can fill by opening the lid on the top. The treats do have to be of the right size. If the treats are too small, they will fill the opening area for the thrower and get stuck. Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance mini-rewards are too small for the Furbo, for example. When the treats have the right size, the treat dispenser works accurately and fast.Dog InteractionIt can take some time for a dog to get used to a smart pet camera. It greatly depends on the dog. Some just start playing with it, while others don’t seem to understand it for a while.During the first two days, I introduced Saydee to Furbo as instructed in the training video. She appeared to respond well. I left for a few hours. Within 5 minutes of my departure, I receive a barking alert from the Furbo app. I didn’t check it right away as I was in an Uber. Another minute, another alert, again another minute another alert. I checked the app and my dog was barking at the door. I proceeded to say her name and she left the door and walked towards the Furbo and walked back to the door. Her barking initiated again, I called her again and threw a treat from the Furbo. She ran back to the door and began barking again. I tried different phrases and continued shooting out treats. She never ate the treats and went back to the door barking. My dog is not picky, and usually, acts like treats will disappear if she doesn’t inhale them. So, her not eating the treats was quite astonishing. She eventually stopped barking about after approximately 45 minutes remained quiet for the next 5 hours.
My dog is ten years old, and it may take some time for her to become acquainted with Furbo.
