Now that you’ve practiced leaving your dog alone while you’re there, it’s time to practice letting your dog be home by themselves for a little bit longer.
In the next part of our training series, we’ll focus on the best ways to train your dog outside of the house to let them know that being home alone is ok!
Here are some tips from Zak George to keeping your dog happy and relaxed while you’re gone:
- Stay quiet and calm. When you leave, try not to make a fuss or get your dog excited. The less of a big deal it is when you leave, the more likely they are to remain calm.
- Leave them with a chew or another favorite toy. If your pup has their mind occupied and their paws busy, they’ll barely even notice you’re gone!
- Toss treats, then leave. Using the Furbo app, you can distract your pup with a reward through the Furbo app. Creating a routine like a treat before you leave will let your dog know what to expect.
- One signal of distress can be barking, or continuous barking. Furbo’s barking alert can let you know if your dog is making noise, and even detects if your pup is crying, howling, or continuous barking. You can customize Furbo’s noise sensitivity levels and what kind of alerts you get sent to get the best experience personalized for you and your furbaby.
- In the previous blog, Zak suggested trying to let your dog calm down on their own before intervening. If they relax after a few barks, you can reward them with treat toss!
- If they are continuously barking or crying, it may be time to incorporate another one of Furbo’s tools, the 2-way audio feature! Not only can you hear them, you can talk to them! In the video, Zak instructs his dog Inertia to lie down, then rewards her behavior with a treat!
- Using the 2-way audio feature is a great way to calm your dog down. Your voice is familiar to them and lets them know you’re thinking about them.
Once your dog is comfortable and relaxed in their designated space, you can start leaving them for short periods of time, and work your way up to longer durations. There are other alerts Furbo has designed for an extra sense of security. These include fire and carbon monoxide alerts, as well as person alerts. Furbo is your “second set of eyes” for when you’re not home, and gives you ultimate peace of mind that your dog is safe and happy.
