No matter at what stage of life your pup is at, there comes a time when they can’t be with you 24/7. Especially as we head back to the workplace, it’s essential to start your dog with small periods of being alone by themselves.
In our second training blog series accompanied by Zak George, we’ll discuss how to start training your dog to be comfortable at home by themselves.
- Ease them into it. Before leaving your dog at home for long periods of time, start with shorter intervals while you’re still at home with them!
- Get their excess energy out: Depending on your dog’s age, this could mean variable levels of exercise, but if they have lots of energy, this can cause some stress when they are left alone.
- Pick a room or area in your house to leave them alone while you’re still at home. This can be a guest room, bathroom, or a crate. (If you are crate training, start with your pup’s crate open, and reward their calm behavior.)
- Once your dog is calm, leave the room, and watch them through your Furbo app. Go ahead and use the treat tossing feature once they are calm.
- If you want to crate train your dog while you’re out of the home, try starting with them sleeping in their crates. Even if you plan to have your pup sleep in their own bed or in your bedroom, getting them calm in their crate is key!
While you’re home with your pup, use Furbo and its smart alerts to see what your dog is up to. Some of the smart alerts include crying, howling, and continuous barking, which let you know whether your dog is calm or not
Once your dog is quiet, toss them a treat! Zak says that the ideal timing for rewarding behavior is once your dog lets themselves calm down on their own. If your dog’s crying or barking continues, Zak advises that you check to make sure they don’t need another bathroom break.
After your pup has the basics down, try leaving them for longer periods of time. You can check in on them anytime through your phone, and even get snapshots of their activity sent to your Apple Watch.
Furbo Dog Nanny will alert you of dog activity including chewing, going to the bathroom, and running. With these alerts, you won’t miss a beat!
