How to celebrate Thanksgiving with your dog

Thanksgiving is a great holiday to spend time with friends and family, and of course your furbaby! With lots of people over at the house and unfamiliar smells, it can be overwhelming for any pup. However, Thanksgiving is a joyous time that your furbaby can be a part of. Your dog can enjoy festive, pup-friendly treats, and a cozy afternoon surrounded by loved ones.

Thanksgiving snacks

Those big puppy dog eyes can be hard to resist at times. For your dog’s safety and comfort, it’s not the best idea to feed them table scraps or the same foods that you’re gobbling. There are a few treats that your pup can enjoy so they can fill their bellies too!

Here are some healthy options for your pup to partake in:

Guests

If it’s your pup’s first Thanksgiving, or you’re hosting for the first time, having a lot of people in the house can stir up a lot of emotions and cause stress. There are a few ways that you can help to manage anxiety and energy levels.

Exercise

Although these fall mornings may be chilly, getting your dog’s extra energy out can help reduce stress and anxiety that may come up throughout the day. Additionally, it’s better to get their walk in before your day is consumed by cooking and entertaining!

Mental Stimulation

While you’re stirring, chopping, and baking, your pup is probably wondering why you’re not playing with them and feeding them your delicious cooking. There are ways to keep your dog entertained all on their own! Lick mats and snuffle mats can help your dog self-soothe and release endorphins. Lick and snuffle mats can be purchased, but you can also make your own snuffle mat.

All you need is a towel! You can strategically place kibble or treats, and roll the towel into a spiral or like a burrito. Your dog can push through the towel to find snacks for themselves. A very easy way to take up time without having to play fetch.

Comfort zone

If your pup gets overwhelmed by all the commotion of the day, it may be best for them to have a dedicated space with less stimuli for them to relax. Leaving them in a safe room to calm down can reduce stress and fear. Keep an eye on them throughout the day by placing Furbo in their safe space, and even toss them treats through your phone while entertaining your guests!

Your furbabies are family members, and including them in celebrations can be so special. Be thankful for your pup, and enjoy the holiday safely!
